Electroencephalography (EEG)

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a method for studying brain activity by recording the electrical activity of brain cells, which is detected on the surface of the head. The research method is based on the graphical recording of the obtained electrical signals and their interpretation. Simply put, EEG shows us how a child's brain works.

Neurons are the main elements of the central nervous system. They conduct and generate electrical impulses, which are precisely recorded by the device – the electroencephalograph.

Before performing the EEG, our specialist places a cap (helmet) with sensitive electrodes on the patient's head. These electrodes monitor brain activity in a calm state, and then during blinking, deep breathing, and light flashes.

Electroencephalography is absolutely safe for our little patients, so there are no restrictions on its use. However, it is a very important procedure because it enables the specialist to develop an individualized treatment plan for the child, which will be most effective for their specific case.

How to prepare your child for an EEG:
✔Psychological preparation:
-Explain the procedure: In an accessible form, explain to your child what will happen. For example: "The doctor will look at how your brain works using a special device."
-Assure them of safety: Emphasize that the procedure is painless, and the sensors are simply attached to the head. You can also show your child a short introductory video of the process.
-Playful approach: If the child is small, play "doctor" at home, demonstrating how it will look.
-Encouragement: Plan what you will do or buy for your child after the procedure.

✔Physical preparation:
-Washing hair: Wash the child’s hair with shampoo the day before the procedure, avoiding oils or hair gels. Clean scalp will improve electrode contact.
-Hairstyle: Hair should be dry and free of braids or headbands – this will speed up and ease the process.

✔Sleep and nutrition regimen:
-Sleep: Ensure the child has a full night’s sleep before the procedure. Lack of sleep can distort the results.
-Nutrition: The child should be satisfied, but not overly full. A light snack 1–2 hours before the procedure is optimal.
-Restrictions: On the day of the procedure, avoid foods and drinks that can stimulate the nervous system (chocolate, coffee, soda).

✔Medications and health condition:
-If the child is taking medication, consult with the doctor if it should be stopped before the examination.
-In case of a cold, elevated temperature, or another illness, it is better to reschedule the EEG for another day.

✔During the procedure:
-Clothing: The child should wear comfortable, loose clothing that does not cause discomfort.
-Toys: For younger children, bring their favorite toy or book for comfort.
-Accompaniment: Parents can be present during the procedure to help the child feel calm.
