Consultation with an Occupational Therapist
An occupational therapist helps develop skills necessary for daily life, learning, and social interaction. Their goal is to assist children and adults with disabilities in gaining or restoring independence, confidence, and the ability to adapt to life challenges.
During a consultation, the therapist assesses the child’s development level, analyzes difficulties in daily or educational activities, and creates a personalized program to improve their functional skills. At our center, we provide a supportive and welcoming environment for every child to thrive.
When should you consult an occupational therapist?
✔During rehabilitation, if recommended by other specialists (neurologist, FRM doctor, psychologist) for developing independence skills.
✔For prevention and adaptation in cases of developmental delays, motor difficulties, or daily living challenges.
When is a preventive consultation needed?
-If there are delays in motor development (e.g., late use of a spoon or hands in play)
-Before starting kindergarten or school to assess readiness
-If the child struggles with dressing, feeding, or self-care
-When adaptation is needed after an injury or illness
What symptoms indicate the need for an occupational therapist?
✔For infants:
-Lack of interest in manipulating objects (not reaching for or holding toys)
-Fine motor delays (difficulty holding objects or using a spoon)
-No progress in self-care skills (dressing, feeding)
✔For older children:
-Challenges with writing, drawing, or tasks requiring coordination
-Difficulties in play, learning, or interacting with peers due to lack of independence
-Delayed self-sufficiency (e.g., tying shoelaces, buttoning, eating)
Why is it important to consult an occupational therapist?
-You’ll receive a clear plan for developing your child’s essential skills
-Occupational therapy prepares children for social life and self-care
-Sessions improve fine motor skills, coordination, attention, and social abilities
-Early intervention helps prevent complications later in life
What happens during the consultation?
The therapist talks to the parents and examines the child to determine their developmental level. They assess the ability to perform basic tasks like holding a spoon, playing, drawing, or fastening buttons. Based on the findings, the therapist develops a personalized rehabilitation and adaptation plan, provides home exercises, and, if needed, suggests special tools or devices.
Contraindications:
There are no absolute contraindications for an occupational therapy consultation. However, sessions should be postponed if the child has an acute infectious disease or is severely exhausted.
