Consultation with an Epileptologist
An epileptologist is a specialized doctor who diagnoses, treats, and helps manage epilepsy and other neurological disorders associated with seizure conditions. Their role is to select effective therapy, improve the quality of life for the child and their family, and support the patient throughout treatment.
During the consultation, the epileptologist thoroughly examines the medical history, assesses the child’s nervous system, and develops an individual treatment plan. If necessary, additional EEG diagnostics are performed to gain detailed information. At our center, we provide support and understanding in a safe and comfortable environment for every child.
When should you consult an epileptologist?
✔If the child has a prior diagnosis of epilepsy, for monitoring and treatment adjustments.
✔If epilepsy or other seizure conditions are suspected.
✔For prevention or evaluation after seizures or other neurological symptoms.
When is a preventive consultation needed?
-After the first seizure, even if it was isolated
-For monitoring in cases of neurological diseases that may provoke seizures
-Following head injuries, CNS infections, or prolonged medication use affecting brain function.
What symptoms indicate the need for an epileptologist?
✔Infants and young children:
-Sudden movements (jerking, limb tension, freezing in one position)
-Abrupt lack of response to external stimuli
Loss of consciousness, followed by prolonged recovery
✔Older children:
-Seizures, especially if recurrent
-Sudden memory lapses or disorientation
-Loss of consciousness or episodes of "freezing."
-Frequent headaches with dizziness or nausea
-Tics or repetitive involuntary movements difficult to control
Why is it important to consult an epileptologist?
-Early diagnosis and management significantly improve treatment effectiveness and the child’s quality of life;
-You will receive a personalized therapy plan tailored to your child's needs;
-The specialist will explain how to act during a seizure and how to reduce or avoid seizure triggers;
-Even if seizures occurred only once, the consultation can determine whether treatment is necessary;
What happens during the consultation?
The doctor thoroughly examines the medical history, symptoms, and potential triggers, assessing the child’s nervous system, reflexes, and overall development. Additional tests (EEG, MRI) may be prescribed for diagnosis clarification. Following the consultation, the doctor develops an individual treatment plan, including medication, lifestyle advice, and seizure prevention strategies.
Contraindications:
There are no absolute contraindications for an epileptologist consultation. However, it is recommended to postpone the visit during acute infectious diseases or extreme exhaustion. After seizures, some time may be needed for the child’s condition to stabilize.
